August 3, 2020 Reimagining Safety: Policing, Abolition, and the Future of Democracy
Executive Session manager Anamika Dwivedi provided framing for the town hall, the unjust killings of Black people, and introduced Executive Session participants Tracey Meares and Pat Sharkey, who kicked off the discussion by exploring the relationship between social inequalities, racism, policing, and violence prevention. Tracey and Pat then joined Roundtable participants Ron Davis, Heather Ann Thompson, and Jahmal Cole in a group discussion on the history of structural racism, state violence, abolition, and the safety narrative, moderated by Roundtable moderator Sukyi McMahon. The event closed with a powerful conversation between Sukyi and Roundtable participant Marlon Peterson.
